Prepaid Legal Services? Are they worth the money and are they any good?

I really can't afford any attorney but don't qualify for "legal aid" and I have a legal issue that has come up. Has anyone ever used a "Prepaid Legal Service"? If so, what do you think of them? Are they worth the money? Do they work?

  1. It took me months to get my money back because they couldn't do anything about one of my court situations. Plus I was signed up given false information.
  2. I was a member many years ago. The services they provide are minimal, and one could get almost the same service at many of the charitable legal help organizations - such as those for seniors, etc. I had friends who were profoundly disappointed. I left them a few months after, and have not missed it at all.
  3. These services are best used for general legal advice, or for sending out letters to people. If you already know that you are going to require a lot of legal advice, this won't work for you at all. Read the fine print. There are a number of services offered for "free" such as letter writing. They will give you free advice, but once it's clear that your legal issue is going to be extensive you will be expected to start paying.
