Do lawyers have access to police reports?

Hi I would like to know if lawyers have access to read police reports. This was my first time being arrested and someone told me that I would be receiving mail from lawyers and they were right. I asked a lawyer who I had a free consultation with and told me that they just get a record that someone was arrested and they "jump" on this knowledge and send out the offers? Is this true or do they actually already know your case if you are one of their clients coming in that they previously contacted via mail? I am asking this because I am contacting lawyers that want me to come in to speak to them. I have transportation trouble so some have requested that I fax the police report to them, but someone is telling me that lawyers already have access to police reports and should not need me to send me this information to them. Hopefully someone can clarify this for me Thanks in advance!

Public Comments

  1. Yes they do.
  2. Arrests are pretty much public record, though they might have to do some digging to find your address. But that's not too difficult to do. I wouldn't go with a lawyer who contacts you out of the blue. Such an attorney is desperate for clients, which is not a good sign. To answer your question, no they don't have access to your police report. They can only get that after they become your lawyer, at which time the prosecutor has to disclose the evidence and reports to them at some point in the pre-trial procedings.
  3. They do have access to police reports, and some attorneys go to the courthouse daily to seek out people that have been arrested.
  4. They usually have people within the Dept. who call them with the info!~!
