What are the repercussions when a paralegal gives out legal advice?

I am a paralegal and want to what can happen to me if I go out of my scope of work and give out legal advice?..

  1. You can be sued for practicing law without a license. (This is not for advice to friends, just for work. You can give your educated opinion to anyone not a client.) The attorney you work for should tell you what you may or may not reveal to his/her clients.
  2. Geezer is on the right track, but completely wrong on most of it. It is 100% unethical for a paralegal to give out any legal advice. Period. It doesn't matter if it is a client, friend or family member. Depending on your state, there can be stiff penalties. Google the unauthorized practice of law. There are some states rallying for jail time.
