Can foreign lawyers become qualified to practise in India?

Is there a process for non-Indian, foreign lawyers to become qualified in India? If so, does the procedure vary from state to state, or is there a national standard? I'm qualified in the US (California) and the UK (England/Wales), but have lived many years in India and am wondering if I could ever work here as a lawyer.

  1. lyou would have more of a problem if your law degree was from India and you were trying to work in america or uk. But since your law degree is from us and uk, i don't see you having a problem practicing in India, you would probably just need an indian license. Remember we are talking about india, people there can BUY degrees, it's been done, bad but true. Im indian, i know how corrupt it is there.
  2. I doubt very much that you can practice law in India. As far as I know...only Indian lawyers can do so. Case in point...being the KASAB trial... (he is the only 26/11 chappies who had the bad luck to get caught alive) He has asked for a Pakistani lawyer.... Cest ne pas possible... He can only be defended by an Indian lawyer. Hope that helps
  3. No Dear, only persons enrolled by any state council can practice law in india. For enrollment in State Bar Council you should be an India and need to pass LL.B. from any recognised university. hope this will work
  4. You have to take a examination ( before that you have to study Indian law , work under a senior ) You have to register with Bar council But it will take time become a lawyer
  5. For practising in any court,in India , a lawyer needs to get registered with the concerned bar council. Therefore,I would advise u to meet the president or secretary of the concerned bar council (the bar where u want to practise )n get registered.A registration will make ur path smoother for practising law in India.
  6. no as per existing anarchic rules no lawyers like other indians do not want competition in their profession
